Artist Statement
I’m a designer and sculptor. I work at the intersection of art, craft, and design.
Through the years, I’ve created several different furniture collections and sculpture series. For example, I’ve been working on The Umasi Collection since 2005, the Mirror Series since 2010, Z Squared since 2022, and Roadside since 2024. These are my primary studio pursuits. They are all represented here.
The Umasi Collection is specifically designed to blur the line between furniture and sculpture. Scrap metal, used telephone poles, abandoned trampoline parts, salvaged ship masts, old bicycle frames, crushed aluminum cans, and beams from demolished buildings are the basic ingredients in this collection. These ingredients are reborn to create exquisite – and sometimes controversial – functional and nonfunctional objects.
The Mirror Series represents a private dialogue between self and reflected self – not unlike the distance between yourself and your bathroom mirror. With early work, I’m using simple shapes and colors in opposition to illustrate different degrees of self-awareness and mental health. It’s clinically hypothetical. With later work, I’m referencing psychological assessment tests and mental health screening tools to evaluate – and perhaps improve – my own mental health. It’s become very personal.
Z Squared, on the other hand, is a new chair inspired by an iconic chair that was designed by the Dutch designer Gerrit Rietveld nearly a century ago. Z Squared honors Rietveld’s chair, but, I think, demonstrates the thoughtful and bold spirit of my own signature style. It merges traditional handcraft with new technologies like digital engraving on wood and fiber laser precision in steel. The result is a sculptural chair that transcends mere function.
Roadside is pure sculpture. It features perfect panels colliding with crushed and crumpled shapes.
Thank you for your interest in my work.
